The Trunk Show

Shoes. Photos. Letters. Memories. Secrets. What do you hold on to? What do you move? What moves you? In their upcoming dance theater production, Moving Women travels through these questions with both sincerity and comical honesty.

The four founders of the dance company share the role of choreographer, creating a diverse night of performance and collaborative art.  The evening’s work will include the premier of three works, ranging from a modern dance piece exploring the internal struggle between the insatiable desire to share secrets versus the commitment to honor them, to a butoh inspired piece, abstractly exploring the mythology of prophesy.  On the lighter side, the company revives their 2007 work, “Family Peace,” a theatrical number woven together from dancers’ experiences in specific “roles” from their families of origin, brought to the stage with a bit of silliness.

The diverse works are bound together by the investigation of what it is that people hold onto as they travel through life.  What is worthy of holding onto?  What do we store in our “trunks” and what do we discard?  “Traveling to the places in our past is like an emotional scrapbook,” says Kathy Meyers, Co-Founder and Principal Dancer of Moving Women.

Grounded in modern dance, Moving Women honors and invites the diverse perspectives offered by collaboration with other dancers, visual artists, musicians, poets, actors, and performance artists to create original works. Since its inception in 2007, Moving Women’s projects have aimed to explore the cathartic experience of movement and to raise awareness of social issues, especially the challenges of being a woman today.

“[Moving Women] shows an ambition that goes beyond the scope of avant-garde theater and into the realm of truly innovative art.”--Mountain Xpress.

Then read the recent review on the Mountain Xpress theatre blog.  "...The Trunk Show is not to be missed. Conceptually dynamic and rich, the program demonstrates the ease in which the company moves from one concept to the next, setting to motion a compelling portrait of the human spirit..."
