CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS
No Child…
by Nilaja Sun
Director: Charlie Flynn-McIver
Production Dates: 6 Week Contract – Rehearses 4/7/26, Previews 4/29/26, Opens 5/2/26,
Closes 5/17/26
All roles are portrayed by a single performer who embodies the world of Malcolm X High School in the Bronx. Sixteen characters in total. The play includes (but is not limited to) the following distinct characters:
Ms. Sun – (She/her, Main Character) An energetic, idealistic teaching artist leading the drama residency. Passionate, persistent, and occasionally overwhelmed, she believes fiercely in the students’ potential—even when they do not.
Principal, Teachers, and School Administrators of Malcolm X High School – Overworked and pragmatic, juggling bureaucracy, limited resources, and student needs with a mixture of skepticism and reluctant hope.
Students of Malcolm X High School – A wide range of teenagers with sharply defined personalities, including:
– The class clown who masks vulnerability with bravado.
– The outspoken skeptic who resists participation.
– The shy student who slowly discovers confidence.
– The overachiever navigating responsibility and pressure.
– The tough exterior hiding emotional fragility.
Each student has a distinct physicality, rhythm, and worldview. Their humor is quick, their defenses sharp, and their humanity undeniable.
Janitor – Often the most grounded observers of the school’s daily chaos. Practical, insightful, and unexpectedly poetic.
